Origin Story

Collectif is a partnership between Jon Dueck and Josiah Wiebe. We’re a small design studio in Winkler, MB. Collectif started in the summer of 2012 when we came together under a common interest of filmmaking and created Stationary Life. The project was a little unpolished, but we had a lot of fun working as a team. While we were creating the video, we started talking about the local state of the design and web industry. We decided that it would be a good experiment to start our own studio and build for print and the web.

We chose the name Collectif, because it fit a few of our criteria. We wanted a name represented the idea of working together—as a company and with clients. The French word for Collective matched that and gave pause to bilingualism in Canada.

Current Status

Our brand and website are out of date. We’ve grown a lot as a business since the summer of 2012 and our brand has been left in the dust. In the summer of 2014, we started discussing a more thorough assessment of our brand and vision. Our company is always evolving—that’s what makes it so much fun—and we have a much clearer vision of who we are and where we’re going. We want to develop an identity that better matches our company.

Building in the open

Client work has kept us busy and our website has fallen out of favour—even with ourselves. It’s time to start again!

We’ll be honest, we were only just experimenting with responsive design techniques when we built our website. Our website was the only studio in our city with a responsive layout. We built things in a way that we’d never build today—our process and strategy has evolved so much since then. The web is a different place than it was three years ago, and our online presence doesn’t reflect that.

We created building.collectif.co to give some insight into our design & build process. Follow along with us as we define who we are as a brand.

What’s in it for me?

  1. You’re going to see our process first hand. We aim to be as candid as possible, exposing every aspect of our building process for you to see.

  2. You’ll get to know us. We might just be strangers on the internet right now, let’s get to know each other!

  3. We’re human too. We’ll share our mistakes, our successes, and how we got there.
